Democratization of Technology for IoT: Connectivity on the Edge

Connectivity on the Edge: Evolution of Wireless Technologies

It is now understood that low cost compute elements can be easily built that can control sensor driven appliances but a big challenge lies in the ability to interface with these sensors. Wiring sensors to the compute devices poses several logistical challenges and the ideal solution is to go wireless.

A lot of the compute boards being built have support for wireless technologies like WiFi and Bluetooth and in some cases support for ZigBee, a wireless protocol that supports mesh networks on the edge. This means that a single compute board can interface with multiple sensors, wirelessly and in a bi-directional manner.

What this really implies is that you can easily build wireless sensor driven appliances that can communicate with a low cost computing gateway to send or receive data. This is extremely powerful.

The Rise of the Data Network

People across the globe are moving towards data and data networks. Today, wireless router that beams broadband Internet at high speeds is a given in homes. This was not the case a few years back.

Telecom companies are moving towards monetizing data networks in a big way and therefore making them ubiquitous, knowing fully well that connected devices will grow at a much faster rate as compared to people buying connectivity.  This proliferation of data networks allows devices at the edge to be connected to the Internet – making them ‘connected’ devices. Once connected, such devices can seamlessly send and receive data over the wire.  Applications can be built that interface with these devices and open up a range of interesting possibilities.

A Case in Point Imagine a city decides to build a smart metering solution to consolidate and optimize reading of various utility meters. They decide to build a smart meter that can seamlessly connect to a data network wirelessly and send automated usage data to an application hosted on the cloud. Their bills are automatically calculated based on actual usage. The utility companies benefit as the mechanism is automated and error free. The telecom companies have more and more data being driven over their data networks. The consumer benefits as she pays only for what he uses.

Here is an example of true democratization in hardware, software and connectivity that benefits all stakeholders. This is the disruption that the Internet of Things is bringing about.

In the next blog, we will discuss about how disruptive technologies such as cloud and big datahelp real-world enablement of Internet of Things.
